How apt. There's physics test tomorrow, programming test on sat and maths I test on monday. Sun IS really setting for us man. Anyway, this photo is taken from block E1. My CGL told me about it, said many take their evening breaks there. The view is pretty breathtaking if not for some stupid condominium which stands out like a sorethumb.

Feminism

Below is one of my tutorial question:

A 75.0 kg firefighter slides down a pole while a constant friction force of 300 N retards her motion. A horizontal 20.0 kg platform is supported by a spring at the bottom of the pole to cushion the fall. The firefighter starts from rest 4.00 m above the platform, and the spring constant is 4 000 N/m. Find the maximum distance the spring is compressed. (Assume the friction force acts during the entire motion.)



As a social science student (for the past two years), I gather the following information from the question

1. The examiner is trying to expose certain underlying issues about the roles of female in our modern society. Note how he attempts to create discomfort by making the firefighter female. This is the first stereotype that he/she challenged.

2. The issue about slim females is brought into question here. A few notions can be derived from this. How appropriate is the weight given to this particular female firefighter. Is 75.0 kg the norm weight? Or is the examiner trying to point out that female firefighters are more macho and hence have more muscle mass? What happens when a slim/skinny female wish to be a firefighter? Can she fit in then?

3. Did the examiner purposely mention that the firefighter is a female because of the spring platform. After visiting the Civil Defence Heritage Centre early this year (photos can be found on my flickr), I've realised that the male dominated profession in Singapore has no spring platform to cushion the sliding fall what-so-ever. Hence, did the examiner use the example of a female firefighter to highlight the physical weakness of the females?
