Q. Exams - Classification of degree
In order to obtain a degree, you must hv attempted all 12 units and passed at least 10. If, in your final year exams, you happen to fail one unit, the failure will not affect the classification of your degree. If, in your final year exams, you fail two papers, you are likely to be awarded a Pass degree. Therefore, students who are taking the final exams after which you will be classified must be very careful. If you think you are going to fail two papers, it may be best that you absent yourself from a paper so that you can complete the degree the following year, along with the re-sit(s).
Where classification of degree is concerned, please note that more weightage is placed on Further units. Here's how you do it. If you have taken 4 Foundation units, minus the lowest mark. Of the other 3, derive the average of the 3 marks. Let's call this Score X. Other than the 4 Foundation units, you will have 8 Further units. Place Score X alongside the 8 Further units and choose the best 5 scores out of the 9. If your best 5 scores are 50, 50, 50, 50, 50, you will be awarded a Second Class Honours (lower division) degree. If you have 50, 50, 50, 60, 80, you will still attain a Second Lower Class honours degree. The main idea is that you must have 5 subjects in that Class or better. We realise that sometimes a student may have 70, 70, 70, 70, 50. In such cases, the University is likely to compare your overall aggregate with a scale. If the aggregate falls into the acceptable range for a First Class honours, this person will then be awarded a First Class Honours degree (which is extremely difficult to attain). If the aggregate is not good enough, the student may be awarded a Second Upper Class Honours degree.
5 Foundation units
Where a student has 5 Foundation units, arrange the 5 units from best to worst. Drop the weakest. Find the average for the best and 2nd best. This becomes Score Y. Then calculate the average derived from the 3rd and 4th best. This becomes Score Z. If you have 5 Foundation units, then you must have 7 Further units. Place Scores Y and Z alongside the 7 Further units and choose the best 5 scores out of 9. The rest is as mentioned above.
