Early Bird

The lunar chinese new year is near and i expect it to be here immediately after school starts. Things will get alittle busy and all will be over before you can even say "huh?". That was why i went shopping for clothes a couple days back and that was why it burnt a huge hole in my pocket. I just gathered the clothes i thought was fitting for me and tried them on. Blame it on my carelessness, i didn't do any mental sum before going to the counter and ended up with a shocking $205. Shopping has became a chore ever since i left JC. My mother thinks i look old, i feel old myself but yet the age on my IC clearly indicates early twenties. I can't wear what the kids wear nowadays and have to resort to more expensive shirts. I can't shop much in far east plaza because shirts there are deemed "beng" and it simply doesn't help much when my hair is...gold.

I'm ending my Kranji War Memorial Shots prematurely since it has little or zero impact on my viewers. This one was taken at the portugese settlements at malacca. Lonely tree...

The KWM shots didn't really stick with me.

This one is one darn good B&W, though. You managed to make full use of the tonality, it catches my eye at first sight. Both the sand (or is it soil now? haha) and the sky are gorgeous with alot of detail in them. Like you, I probably won't be able to decide which should be given more priority so you ended up with almost equal distribution of them, but I guess that's fine for this as the lone tree in the middle augments the symmetrical composition.

I like how the lone tree stands in the vast expanse of the sky, sand and sea. Lonely yet seemingly infallible. Nice! One of the best work so far!

j: you disappeared through the festive season (evident from ur blog) and came back with a nice critique. =) tks. you were right about the indecisiveness about sky or rubbish dump. didn't choose to go landscape because there were other "structures" around.

i like this one, hmmm, seems that i like things which represent a little bit of darkness, desperation and despair... haha:)
yep, i'm facing the same prob now too... i dun thnk i can stand the sight of myself in those S&K or Bossini t-shirts, cos i also thnk that i'm too old for that. and this just results "a huge hole in my pocket"... :(

I wonder if this would look better in landscape format? Just seems too much sky and ground and not enough tree.

Amateur comment on composition.

i should have known better regarding my KWM shots, they suck.

yc: there are other things stopping me to use landscape but i'm sure it will be stunning too if i had the choice. btw, you jump onto the net pretty fast once u reached home eh? haha

Apart from the other unwanted elements that Yiren didn't want to capture, a landscape format would capture alot less of the vast sand and sky which would diminish the landscape's (pun intended) grandeur. Not to mention that the lone tree would look too puny and awkward standing in the middle of the landscape version of the photo.

hm, i beg to differ eh.. i think the choice of landscape would further accentuate the loneliness the photographer wants to portray as it would emphasise more on the vastness of the landscape as opposed to the empasis on depth in the choice of portait here..

the placing of the horizon right at the center here cuts the scene into 2 and doesn't work for me eh.. i would have prefered the horizon to be somewhere at the lower thirds as the sky is really beautiful here..

the overexposed sky at the right side oso distracts eh, my eyes keeps pulled over there..

ha, juz my 2cents eh.. ;p keep goin, i have added u in my bookmark liao..

i think the overexposed sky distracts on my com screen, but if u get it printed, it won't really be all that bothersome.

i agree with jx. I'd prefer the horizon at the lower one third of the picture.

that said, this picture is still stunning. get it printed... BIG! haha
