Calories

This post is dedicated to yenlingz and kiathy (if any of them reads this...else it's to the rest of the world who wants to diet). I got this from the text book:

A student eats a dinner rated at 2000 Calories (which is highly unlikely for the two i've named...) He wishes to do an equivalent amount of work in the gym by lifting a 50.0kg barbell. How many times must he raise the barbell to expend this much energy? Assume that he raises the barbell 2.00m each time he lifts it and that he regains no energy when he lowers the barbell. I've made the some additional assumptions to make the situation more realistic; assume after accomodating for the inefficiency of the human heat engine and energy used for the other bodily functions that the food ultimately converts to a efficient of 50%.

1 Calorie = 1000 cal ("Calorie with capital C is actually a kilocalorie and 1 cal = 4.186J)
Work required to be done to completely expend the energy = 2000 Calorie = 2000000 cal X 4.186J/cal X 50% = 4.186e6J
Total work done in lifting barbell = nmgh = n X 50.0 X 9.80 X 2.00 = 4.186e6
Therefore n = 4271

Hence the stupid idiot needs to lift the barbell 4271 times in order to expend the energy gained from the nasilemak.

I know this is not a very flattering shot of my niece but it is the only shot i have of her from last sunday. My mum stopped me from taking shots of her after my first trigger. She was asleep throughout the entire celebration (first month). Pardon this shot...i'll make sure i get better shots of her during my sem break.

thanks man! although i don't even consume 2000 calories a day, i think kiat is fast catching on lah... he can easily eat that amount in one morning
